Honoring the Fallen: Commitment to Truth and Dignity Through the Identification Process
Despite Russia’s ongoing war of aggression, the repatriation of remains remains one of the most difficult and emotionally demanding processes in restoring the identities of those who have perished. Every name carries a story, and every identified individual represents a step toward peace and closure for their family.
Today, tens of thousands of defenders are still considered missing under unknown circumstances. The families of the fallen continue to live in prolonged uncertainty, acutely feeling the lack of information, legal assistance, and resources needed to navigate the complex stages of the identification process.
At times, visual materials depicting work with remains that have been kept in refrigerated storage for years due to the Russian side’s refusal to retrieve its own dead or return our fallen defenders are extremely sensitive. This “war in the refrigerator” is frozen grief—pain suspended in time and difficult to confront.
Any photographs, videos, or audio materials related to this subject carry an immense emotional burden. From our perspective, this requires a particular ethical lens: we strictly adhere to professional standards and carefully review every visual element used in our own materials. At the same time, we recognize that unblurred and deeply disturbing images may circulate across the information space and on third-party media platforms.
For this reason, one of our Foundation’s core missions is to document the truth in support of future justice—not to retraumatize those who are still waiting for news of their loved ones. Equally important to us is the principle of moving through this darkness with unwavering dignity.
We support state forensic bureaus and investigative authorities in scaling their efforts in accordance with international best practices. The Foundation strives to serve as a reliable partner to the state while highlighting the invaluable contribution of the heroes of the largely unseen forensic front. By training experts in comprehensive identification methods and providing them with the necessary tools and logistical support, we help ensure that every mission becomes a step toward honoring the fallen with the respect they deserve.
Our War Victim Identification Program combines advanced forensic science and legal expertise to establish the fate of fallen and missing persons in Ukraine. The identification of the fallen is not merely a legal or medical procedure; it is an integral part of our humanitarian responsibility. We work to locate the missing, restore their names and identities, support the repatriation of both foreign and Ukrainian defenders, and strengthen the national capacity to identify the tens of thousands of missing service members.

Попри те, що Росія продовжує свою агресивну війну, репатріація тіл залишається одним із найважчих та найбільш виснажливих процесів у контексті повернення імен загиблим. Кожне ім'я — це історія, а кожна знайдена людина — це крок до спокою для її родини.
Наразі десятки тисяч захисників досі вважаються зниклими за нез'ясованих обставин. Рідні полеглих живуть у тривалій невідомості, гостро відчуваючи брак інформації, правової допомоги та ресурсів, необхідних для проходження складних етапів ідентифікації.
Іноді візуальні матеріали, які демонструють роботу з тілами, що перебували у рефрижераторах роками через відмову російської сторони забирати своїх або віддавати наших загиблих, є надзвичайно сенситивними. Війна «в холодильнику» — це застиглий біль, на який важко дивитися.
Будь-які фото-, відео- чи аудіоматеріали цієї тематики несуть величезний емоційний тягар. З нашого боку це особлива оптична призма: ми суворо дотримуємося етичних стандартів і контролюємо кожен візуальний елемент у власних матеріалах. Проте ми усвідомлюємо, що в інформаційному просторі чи сторонніх медіаресурсах можуть ширитися незаблюрені, шокуючі кадри.
Саме тому одна з місій нашого Фонду — фіксація правди задля майбутнього правосуддя, а не ретравматизація тих, хто досі чекає на своїх рідних. Поряд із цим для нас принципово важливо проходити крізь цей морок із беззаперечною гідністю.
Ми допомагаємо державним судово-медичним бюро та слідчим органам масштабувати їхні зусилля згідно з найкращими міжнародними практиками. Фонд прагне стати надійною опорою для держави та підкреслити вагомий внесок героїв практично невидимого фронту судово-медичної експертизи. Навчаючи експертів комплексним методам ідентифікації та забезпечуючи їх необхідними інструментами й логістикою, ми гарантуємо, що кожна місія є кроком до вшанування полеглих із повагою, на яку вони заслуговують.
Наша Програма ідентифікації жертв війни поєднує передову судову експертизу та юридичний досвід для встановлення долі полеглих і зниклих безвісти в Україні. Ідентифікація полеглих — це не просто юридична чи медична процедура, це невіддільна частина нашої гуманітарної відповідальності.
Ми прагнемо розшукувати та повертати імена зниклим, підтримувати репатріацію тіл іноземних та українських захисників, а також зміцнювати національну спроможність держави у встановленні осіб десятків тисяч зниклих безвісти військовослужбовців.
